New research is showing that friendly bacteria can reduce stress and improve mental health. The study of 22 healthy men found that volunteers who took the probiotic for one month found that they experienced less stress on a daily basis than those given a "dummy" replacement.

Tests have shown that people who took probiotics on a daily basis performed better on visual memory tasks. The same team have found that the Bifidobacterium longum 1714 bacterial strain was found to have reduced anxiety, stress, depressive symptoms and improved the memory in mice.

The findings from the research have indicated that this could be taken forward with psychological disorders related to stress like general anxiety disorder or a major depression. This research was presented at the Society of Neuroscience's annual meeting in Chicago.

Before the study began, the scientists measured the participants levels of acute stress, brain activity and memory. After another four weeks they were tested again and the volunteers perceived stress and physical responses were tested after being given the B.longum 1714 probiotic.

These findings indicate that this bug may be useful at providing relief for stress-related conditions, although researchers have suggested they require further investigation and studies involving more participants are required.
